Choosing the Right Colour for Your Bifold Doors
March 16, 2026PAS 24 in Plain English
PAS 24 is a British security standard (published by the BSI) that tests how well doors and windows resist physical attack. A product that passes PAS 24 has been independently tested against mechanical force, lock manipulation, and drilling — the methods most commonly used in break-ins.
Why It Matters
Building regulations in England and Wales (Approved Document Q) require that all new and replacement doors and ground-floor windows meet PAS 24 or an equivalent standard. Insurance companies increasingly ask for PAS 24 compliance too — fitting certified products can make claims smoother and may even reduce your premiums.
What the Tests Cover
To achieve PAS 24, a door or window must survive a series of attacks carried out by trained testers:
- Manipulation — attempting to unlock or bypass the locking mechanism with tools
- Mechanical loading — applying force to lever the frame or sash open
- Cylinder attack — drilling, pulling, and snapping the lock cylinder
- Human impact — shoulder-charging or kicking the door at its weakest points
Products must pass every stage. A single failure means no certification.
PAS 24 vs. Secured by Design
Secured by Design (SBD) is a police-backed scheme that uses PAS 24 as its minimum standard but adds extra requirements around hardware, glazing, and installation. An SBD-approved product is always PAS 24, but PAS 24 on its own doesn’t guarantee full SBD status.
Are All Our Products PAS 24?
Yes. Every bifold door, French door, composite door, and window we sell is manufactured and tested to meet PAS 24:2016 (the current edition). You’ll receive documentation confirming compliance with your order — ready for building control sign-off or your insurer.
Things to Watch Out For
- “Designed to PAS 24” is not the same as “tested to PAS 24”. Always ask for the test report reference.
- Cheap aftermarket hardware can void compliance — stick with the hardware supplied with your door.
- Incorrect installation can compromise the certification. We recommend professional fitting or following our installation guides to the letter.
